"The Compassionate Friends is about transforming the pain of grief into the elixir of hope...."
In September of 2007 the charter for the local chapter of The Compassionate Friends of Toledo Bend was completed. With a desire to not let “Any Child Be Forgotten” this monument was placed within the Dennis Freeman Memorial River Park in the Southeast Corner at Elm Street. Because of the local support of the community and a tremendous influx of donations the original 4 foot wall was able to be enlarged and a 5 foot monument was designed. On the memorial wall are spaces for plaques inscribed with the names of children as a memorial for the families that have experienced the unthinkable tragedy of the loss of a child.
Each year a memorial service is held within the park, candle lighting and a balloon release allows these families to come together and share their grief that they previously had to carry alone and draw from the strength that comes with sharing.
The original monument was possible because of the generous donations of area families within the Logansport community and from other communities that surround our Town. Although the River separates, us those in our Texas neighboring communities are very much a part of our Town community.
Because of the desire to be able to offer plaques to others in need because of tragedy, free of charge, donations are always welcome and needed. Please contact the Compassionate Friends of Toledo Bend if you would like to donate to this worthy cause or if you need more information.
